01 · The Market Place

A market
since 1141.

Calm down — we've had nine hundred years of practice. Walk in past the fountain, and find what's worn here.

The market place

Five for the town centre — its postcodes, its weather, its nine-hundred-year shrug.

02 · The Common

Seventeen rings.
One way out.

The largest turf maze in England. About a mile of path to the middle, and the same back. Walk it in.

03 · The Castle

Up in 1141.
Down by 1158.

Bits of it still disagree. Nine hundred years and it hasn't moved on. Same, mate.

04 · The Old Sun · Why Walled In

We didn't
invent the joke.

The town arms put a saffron crocus inside a castle wall. Walled in, since 1685. The town did the joke. We just took the hint.

05 · The Saffron Fields

A quarter
million flowers.

For a single ounce. The whole town is named after that kind of effort.

The saffron

Before saffron, it was Chepyng Walden — “Market Walden.” Then the crocus made the town rich, and by the 1540s the market name gave way to the crop. The flower paid.

06 · Catons Lane

The Bloods.
Since 1872.

The 19th oldest football club in the world. And they'll tell you. End of the walk — now take some home.

Tee. Cap. Sticker on the bottle.

Start with a £4 sticker, end with a heavyweight hoodie. Most of the town builds the kit one piece a drop — wear it round the market, tag us, end up on the wall.
